I was listening to a comedian and he said something interesting, "if you go back and fix all of your mistakes then you erase yourself."
Soccer is a game where you get punished hard for your mistakes. A goal can change a game. With tennis, baseball, basketball, golf, mistakes rarely cost the game. I like that soccer punishes players so much for mistakes. It build character and makes you prepare that much better.
The mistake in overtime cost us the game; however, so did missing a few wide open shots on goal. These mistakes will better prepare us for next time!

Corner Canyon - THS
We scored within the first minute of the game on a heads up play. Was a fun game to watch. We played with heart, had great combinations, but didn't find the back of the net like we needed to.
I saw a lot of young players go in and fight hard. We had people sitting out for losing their tempers and not representing the school appropriately. Most people I talk to about this say things like, "they are just teenagers." I get that portion, but excusing a person for bad behavior can cause all sorts of issues.
We can only hold people responsible for behavior, not circumstances. If you cannot behave well in any circumstance you will end up with unnecessarily difficult life experiences.
I'm excited for the future and glad to see many of you making so much progress.
Goal: Nathan Conrad
Assist: Jordan Strong
Player of the game: Silverio - he ran and ran, had great passing patterns, played hard.

MV vs THS
One tough thing about sports is that the best team doesn't always win. I think this is especially true in soccer. Despite the penalty kicks, we somehow stayed close enough to almost win the game.
Vince Lombardi once said:
“Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”
Although we didn't win this game we worked hard, persevered, and competed with real desire.
Goals - Anferney Mendoza, Silverio Gonzalez
Player of the game - Anferney Mendoza - hustled, marked, scored!

Last Game - Alta - 8-0 Loss
After trying to figure out what went wrong in the game, I watched the game film. I made some clips about key moments that caused us to completely self destruct. A few key moments really defined the game, but these moments were defined long before the game started.
I was nervous for this game to say the least. The last two practices only 50% of you were on time, even after receiving repercussions for the same thing all year. During practice, no matter how much we run, we still seem to blame others and walk. Preparing for games starts with every touch, every drill, every possession, etc.
These are the things that defined our last three games:
1. Preparing for big moments. We went uphill into the wind when we won the toss. Why wasn't the decision made in advance? Making things harder than they are for the sake of making them hard doesn't make sense.
2. Practice, outside of practice. I asked how many people had continued the T20 program after the program was over, and not one had. Not one senior completed the program. When big moments come in the game and we are prepared, we will have the confidence to succeed.
3. Listening. A comment was made after the game that nobody listens to each other. When I played in practice yesterday, I understand completely. I would ask for the ball and wouldn't get it. I would ask someone to mark, and they wouldn't mark. I would tell someone to run through, they would, at half pace.
4. Trusting your leaders. I asked a player if he got a free kick to not clear the wall, but hit it low; he tried to clear the wall. We (as coaches) tell you to take shots from distance, play one touch, attack from the wings, and not put balls back into the middle from the defense. Our team have not made the effort to do this since we played Mountain View.
All of the above can be summarized as pride. I call this type of pride as the "thumbs up" syndrome. These lip service gestures do nothing to change behavior. Someone tells you to do something and you give them the thumbs up, but then do the opposite.
If you want people to listen to you, or be lead by you, then you must listen and you must follow. If you want to be trusted, then you need to do the hard things that help people trust you. Usually pride comes from those on the bottom looking up, not those on top looking down.
I truly believe that this loss can help us understand where we are and what we need to do.
Player of the Game: Jose Delgado - hustled his brains out.

Captain's Responsibilities Sheets
If you are a captain, your responsibilities are detailed here: CAPTAIN SHEET
First Four Games
Timpanogos - 3
Hillcrest - 2
Played well - last minute winner by Silverio. Our high defensive line made all the difference.
Goals - Nathan Conrad - 2, Silverio Gonzalez - 1
Assists - Anferny Mendoza - 2
Player of the game - Silverio for his last minute antics.
Timpanogos - 1
Pleasant Grove - 2
A couple small mistakes can be the difference between winning and losing. We played well and had many chances to win this game.
Goals - Nathan Conrad - 1
Player(s) of the game - midfield, we won almost every ball that came through the middle.
Timpanogos - 2
Provo - 0
After a good amount of time discussing how little things can make a big difference in a game, we got two great opportunities for free kicks. Both were finished with deadly precision.
Goals - Nathan Conrad - 2
Player of the Game - Nate Conrad, hit 2 out of 3 free kicks.
Timpanogos - 1
Alta - 3
Far too casual in our lead, with 10 minutes to go we gave up three goals. Losing sometimes teaches us more than winning. I'm excited to see how we respond to adversity and take on the next challenge.
Player of the game - Jose Delgado - hustled and won tackles the whole time he was in.
